We will discuss applications of computer science to music. Topics will include: How to represent music and musical scores? What is MIDI? How does MP3 work? How does recording software work, and what can be done with it? How to extract rhythms and musical scores from raw acoustic data? What is the mathematics behind 3D-sound effects? A subset of the proseminar will focus on music and machine learning: automatic song recognition based on training exemplars (e.g. how does last.fm work?), learning to recognize musical style, learning to compose music in a particular style, learning to interpret musical scores by imitation of accomplished artists, etc. For example, Experiments in Musical Intelligence by David Cope or Wolfram Tones can serve as nice topics.
