Hi there! I'm Othmane, a passionate advocate of all things Artificial Intelligence, Basketball, Biology and Politics. I believe that curiosity is the gateway to creativity and innovation. I am, therefore, always on the lookout for new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow.
I am proficient in several programming languages, data analysis and machine learning frameworks. My strong understanding of statistical modeling and software engineering enables me to handle complex projects and contribute effectively to team efforts.
Here are my work experiences and education.
May 2022 - Aug 2023
As a working student at Walaris, I was a member of the Artificial Intelligence team. I had the opportunity to develop, train, and deploy deep learning models for multi-object detection, tracking, and classification. To improve the accuracy of these models, I also implemented online data augmentation techniques (i.e image inpainting, domain translation). Finally, I designed and implemented a comparative benchmarking pipeline for model evaluation.
June 2021 - Sept 2021
Developed a full-stack B2C software bundle for the Moroccan royal holding 'Sotherma'. The software, built using Java, NodeJS and VueJS, focused on product management for the company. I also led and coordinated a team of developers, assessing daily progress in an agile environment.
Sept 2020 - June 2021
Provided students with academic support and taught different computer science and math courses. Tutored students in calculus, Object Oriented Programming, Languages and Compilers and programming languages like C and Python. I also led classroom lectures and discussions on data structures and algorithms.
April 2023 - Sep 2023
Investigated the trade-off between privacy and utility in models trained with differential privacy, focusing on the impact of gradient clipping and noise addition on various model architectures used in the medical domain.
Feb 2020 - Aug 2020
Investigated how amino acid mutations impact the stability of the COVID-19 proteome
using computational methods. We found that specific mutations had a significant impact on
the
protein's structural stability. These findings provide important insights into how the
virus works and how to develop treatments. Our paper ranked 2nd at the prestigious
ACM-BCB conference.

Sept 2019 - Feb 2020
Participated in the design and development of InterviewR: a Human-Computer Interaction project aiming to help neurodiverse individuals conduct better interviews in a virtual reality environment.
Oct 2021 - Present
Currently pursuing a M.Sc. in Data Engineering and Analytics.
Sept 2019 - Aug 2020
As part of a one-year exchange program, I was recognized as a top ten student researcher.
I
was also awarded a lifetime honorary membership from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by the end of the
program.
Aug 2017 - Jun 2021
I graduated with Summa Cum Laude from my B.Sc. in Computer Science, which I attended on a full-ride merit-based scholarship. I was awarded the Stonehenge prize for the best research-oriented bachelor's thesis of my cohort. Additionally, I founded the CS-Innov computer science club and volunteered with Rotaract for two years.
Developped a deep learning pipeline for detecting ocular diseases from retinal fundus images. The blood vessel extraction process involves techniques such as CLAHE, median filtering, mean-C thresholding, morphological cleaning, and pixel-island removal. The classification step uses a convolutional Neural Network and a K-NN.
Python, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, Deep LearningWe investigated the impact of amino acid mutations on the stability of the main protease of the COVID-19 proteome. The research involved studying the structural and dynamic changes in the protease caused by the mutations. The focus was on exploring the effects of these mutations on the overall stability of the protease, which is a key target for developing antiviral drugs.
C/C++, Bioinformatics, SDM, COVID-19 SummerA machine learning library for neural networks written in Python, with support for multiple layers, various activation functions, optimization algorithms, and utility functions. It is similar to popular ML frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
Python, Linear Algebra, Deep LearningA CNN model that classifies mammograms as normal or cancerous with 85% accuracy. The training was done on Google Colab using GPU acceleration. The model was built using TensorFlow and Keras in Python.
Python, TensorFlow, KerasThe project is a Neuroevolution simulation that uses a combination of Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms to play the game Flappy Bird. The simulation was implemented in Python, and the goal was to evolve the AI agent to achieve the highest score possible in the game.
JavaScript, Genetic Algorithms, Neuro-evolutionA web app that lets users play chess against an intelligent engine based on game theory and AI. The engine uses the Minimax algorithm, Alpha-beta pruning, and chess theory for optimal moves. The app also has features like legal moves, pre-moves, castling, capturing en-passant, PGN logging, and score calculation.
JavaScript, MiniMax, Game Theory, Alpha-Beta pruningCreated a platform that connects people who are in need, particularly those who are underprivileged, with others willing to offer assistance during the pandemic. The platform is based on proximity, helping people connect with those nearby who are willing to offer assistance. We were able to help 1000+ people in Morocco.
NodeJS, HTML/CSS, MongoDBThis project is a 3D simulation that showcases the interactions and behaviors of Brogs, which are AI-powered agents that represent individuals in a society. The simulation allows for observing and analyzing different social scenarios and their outcomes.
C#, Unity, Blender, Path-finding, BiologyA simulation of human society that allows users to control the collective behaviour of the population with regard to COVID-19 prevention measures. The simulation showcases how COVID-19 can spread in a population based on the collective behaviour. A chart is displayed every two weeks to show the impact of collective actions, infection rate, death rate and hospital capacity.
JavaScript, Simulation, VirologyWe created Arduino League, a game where AI robots play soccer. Our car operates under AI we programmed, equipped with ultrasonic sensors. We used an Arduino board, and 3D printed the base of the car. Our accomplishment was getting the car to move and think autonomously. This project has the potential to pave the way for international-scale competitive AI Sports.
C, Arduino, AI, Sensor FusionAl Akhawayn University• June 2021
I was awarded the Stonehenge prize for the best research-oriented bachelor's thesis of my
cohort. My thesis focused on
identifying potential health issues such as diabetic retinopathy
and aiding doctors in diagnosing and treating then at an early stage.
The methods employed
involved analyzing extracted blood vessels from retinal fundus images.
Harvard University - MakeHarvard2020• January 2020
I was recognized and awarded in Harvard's annual Makeathon, MakeHarvard 2020, the Outstanding Maker

This event provided an opportunity for engineering enthusiasts to come together and
collaborate on innovative projects.
Winning this award was a great honor and a testament to my
creativity and problem-solving skills.
National Society of Collegiate Scholars• Feb 2020
I was awarded lifetime honorary membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars during my
exchange program
at Western Washington University. This prestigious honor society recognizes
academic excellence, leadership, service, and community
involvement, and provides a network of
accomplished scholars and resources to achieve academic and career goals.
